COVID19 and the Torus of Change

The Metaphysics of A Global World in Transition

Kelly Nezat and Debra A. Harkins

Things falling apart is a kind of testing and also a kind of healing. We think that the point is to pass the test or to overcome the problem, but the truth is that things don’t really get solved. They come together and they fall apart. Then they come together again and fall apart again. It’s just like that. The healing comes from letting there be room for all of this to happen: room for grief, for relief, for misery, for joy.” — Pema Chodron

Our world is clearly in crisis, a state of imbalance, dis-ease, and uncertainty. People are feeling helpless and thinking that they are at the mercy of forces that they can’t control and nothing feels right and everything feels wrong. Exhausted, numb, tired, socially isolated, overwhelmed, and uncertain about how to do daily life much less how to plan for the future. None of this is new. We have been here for a long time. The difference now is that we cannot afford, on the most fundamental level of survival, to continue ignoring the problems that we must personally and collectively solve if we are to survive and thrive in the world ahead.

We’ve long ago passed the event-horizon of an unsustainable culture. We are all awakening to the reality that we are spiraling exponentially faster into a collision between a former worldview and a new world that is emerging. We are entering the Omega point of no return, to something new, something yet known. And as challenging as that may sound, it is clear that it is neither a choice to go back to what does not serve humanity nor is it an option to abdicate personal responsibility to support a more harmonious, nature-based reality. Exponential growth is a symptom of our malignancy. We are out of harmony with the cycles and rhythms of nature and as all of us are aware that this situation is not sustainable. We may sense and feel that the world as we’ve known it is crashing around us. Yes, we agree, it is! It is no longer deniable.

We are suffering from more than just Coronavirus!

Recall that before COVID19, people were already feeling lost, burdened, distracted, and disconnected. No amount of antidepressants or anti-anxiety drugs could solve it. No amount of self-help could absolve any of us from our collective challenges. Clearly, those we’ve entrusted to provide a functional and sustainable society have become distracted by forces that are not aligned with a sustainable world. Economies failing, people feeling like they were working in meaningless jobs, involved in a world that was speeding-up exponentially with daily demands that never seemed to end.

The world was and is moving deeper and deeper into a depersonalized and automated realm as we feel more and more isolated from our true self and from those we love and the world we dream of living. We have been suffering in this world long before Coved-19. The fears we have of surviving have been gripping us on levels that are often beyond conscious awareness. Like carrying the Corona virus without awareness. We’ve all been infected with a world that is dangerously out of touch and out of sync with the demands of a sustainable future.

We are suffering the results of a lifestyle that has alienated us from the wisdom of the natural world. We are out of harmony with the rhythm of nature, the natural ways of being that offer a more sustainable living. We have externalized our ability to self-govern internally and externally. The most powerful ally we have is nature, our bodies, and our perception of reality. These elements are the most vital aspects of not only survival but thriving in any environment. We agree with Roy when she points out that

Nothing could be worse than a return to normality. Historically, pandemics have forced humans to break with the past and imagine their world anew. . . We can choose to walk through it, dragging the carcasses of our prejudice and hatred, our avarice, our data banks and dead ideas, our dead rivers and smoky skies behind us. Or we can walk through lightly, with little luggage, ready to imagine another world. And ready to fight for it.” — Arundhati Roy

In our next blog, we will be discussing what challenges that await us as we confront the inevitable reckoning ahead. Although all of this is anxiety provoking, terrifying, and scary as we face the unknown, as we all attempt to get our footing in a world that has gone mad — things will get better. We will explore what is happening at a micro and macro scale, what is demanded on a personal and local level, as well as what is called for on a more global level.
